Yash’s Shiv Tandav in Ramayana wins praise for its visuals, but Reddit users say AR Rahman’s music falls short

Dussehra brought a big treat for fans of the upcoming epic ‘Ramayana’. The makers dropped a fiery song sequence in which Yash, playing Ravana, performs the Shiv Tandav as a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. Say what you like about the new ‘Ramayana’ song, but nobody is complaining about how it looks. The trouble, according to a loud section of Reddit, is how it sounds.
Many users felt the music let the imagery down. The blunt ones came first. “A.R. Rahman is a bad choice for the movie.” wrote one. Another said, “Rahman is the weakest aspect of this movie. Salman wasn’t wrong when he said he’s average at best.”
Others were more careful about it. “Visually good, song could be better. A.R. Rahman,” read one short comment. A second user agreed on the visuals and added, “True that! Visuals are amazing. 90s ka Rahman would have made it truly magical.”
That wish for the old Rahman ran through many of the comments. One fan tried to balance respect with disappointment: “I agree he’s not as good as he used to be. But when he was good, he was legendary. Let’s not pretend he doesn’t deserve the praise he got back then, or the Oscar.

His music was so consistent and phenomenal. As a fan of his work, I am saddened to see how much of the stuff he does now feels generic.”
Some people thought the film should have gone elsewhere. “Absolutely. Even Ajay-Atul or Amit Trivedi would have been a good choice,” came the reply.
Another user spotted a habit in his recent work. “Sometimes it feels like when AR Rahman does a big budget movie, he always makes the most mid music imaginable, and then occasionally puts out albums like Mai Vaapas Aaunga to be like, ‘guys, I still got it.’ I agree that Rahman’s peak was much higher than most other composers in India, but he is so inconsistent nowadays.”
The harshest verdict was also the shortest: “AR Rahman is the most overhyped atp.”
Who made the song
The video lasts one minute and 55 seconds. The Hindi version was composed by AR Ameen and Hiral Viradia. Dr Kumar Vishwas wrote the lyrics, and Vishal Dadlani sang it. The project is also the first time AR Rahman has worked with Hans Zimmer, who has won an Oscar.

A Tamil track called Ravana Tandavam has been released as well. It features GV Prakash Kumar and Anirudh Ravichander, and it is the first time the two composers have sung together on one song.
‘Ramayana’ is being made in two parts. The first is due to reach cinemas worldwide in October 2026, just ahead of Diwali, and the second follows on Diwali 2027.
