A sarcastic congratulatory message by a retired Army lieutenant general on Aamir Khan's marriage has ignited an online debate, with a retired Air Force officer calling the remark unbecoming of a senior military veteran.

A dose of sarcasm meant to draw laughs has instead triggered a heated online debate.
A social media post by retired Lieutenant General Devendra Pratap Pandey has come under scrutiny after his tongue-in-cheek response to actor Aamir Khan's marriage to longtime partner Gauri Spratt sparked criticism from fellow veterans and social media users.
The controversy unfolded after former India cricketer Irfan Pathan congratulated Aamir Khan on his wedding in a post on X. Reposting the message, Lt Gen (Retd.) Pandey wrote, ‘Amir Bhai congratulations on the holy marriage. Many more to come.’
The remark quickly gained traction, drawing mixed reactions online.
Among the strongest critics was retired Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur, who publicly questioned the appropriateness of the comment. Responding on X, he wrote, ‘General, to put it mildly, it does NOT behove a three-star General of our Army to stoop to such a level.’
His criticism fuelled a wider discussion over whether former senior military officers should exercise greater restraint on social media, particularly while commenting on public figures.
However, many users defended Pandey's post, arguing that it was an obvious joke referencing Aamir Khan's previous marriages and that it was being taken more seriously than intended.
The exchange has since evolved into a broader conversation about the fine line between humour and decorum in public discourse, especially when comments come from individuals who once held high constitutional and institutional responsibilities.
The debate comes a day after Aamir Khan married Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony at his Mumbai residence.
The intimate wedding was attended by close family members and friends and prompted congratulatory messages from celebrities, fans and public figures.
