Vijay Sethupathi's ‘Maharaja’ is set to make its way to Hollywood, with a remake of the Tamil thriller currently being developed by a Hollywood agency. While the project is yet to have an officially announced cast or studio, producer Sudhan Sundaram has confirmed that an A-list actor is being considered for the lead.

Among the names circulating online is Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, who has been linked to the project on social media. However, his involvement remains unconfirmed, with the makers yet to announce who will take on the role originally played by Sethupathi.

Why is ‘Maharaja’ getting a Hollywood remake?

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, ‘Maharaja’ was released in 2024 and went on to attract attention beyond its original Tamil audience. Its performance in China, in particular, appears to have helped spark interest from Hollywood.

Speaking to The Times of India, Sundaram said the filmmakers were approached for the remake rights after the movie performed strongly in China across theatrical and streaming platforms.

"Following the success of the film in China, where the film did very well both at the box office (Rs 91.65 crore, according to Sacnilk) and on OTT, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights. They are now trying to set up the project with an A-list star. The film is likely to go on floors by next year," Sudhan told The Times of India.

According to Sacnilk, ‘Maharaja’ collected around Rs 91.65 crore at the Chinese box office. Its availability on OTT also helped extend its reach among international audiences.

Is Matthew McConaughey playing Vijay Sethupathi's role?

The possibility of McConaughey starring in the remake has emerged from social media speculation, but there is no official confirmation that the actor has been signed.

Sundaram addressed the speculation while speaking about the project, suggesting that McConaughey could be among the actors being considered.

"Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm," he shared.

The producer's comments leave the casting open, with the Hollywood agency expected to provide details about the lead actor and the studio once the project takes shape.

What is ‘Maharaja’ about?

The original film centres on a barber, played by Vijay Sethupathi, whose seemingly unusual visit to a police station begins with a missing dustbin. What initially appears to be a simple complaint gradually opens the door to a much darker chain of events.

Swaminathan's film uses a non-linear narrative, with its characters and incidents gradually connecting as the story unfolds. Sethupathi plays the central character, while Anurag Kashyap appears in a key antagonist role.

Sanchana Namidass plays Sethupathi's daughter in the film. Her performance later earned her the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.

When could the Hollywood remake release?

The remake is still in the development stage, and several key details remain under wraps. The studio, director, cast and release plans have not been officially announced.

Sundaram said the project could enter production next year, although that timeline may depend on the Hollywood agency finalising the cast and other elements of the production.
