Imran Khan’s Netflix comeback film Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, co-starring Bhumi Pednekar, may face a delay amid uncertainty over the notice asking him to leave India

Actor Imran Khan’s return to Bollywood may have hit an unexpected roadblock. His upcoming Netflix film, ‘Adhure Hum Adhure Tum’, could see its release postponed after the actor received a notice directing him to leave India by October 28. The development has reportedly put the film’s promotional plans on hold, leaving its comeback campaign in limbo.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the film was scheduled to premiere on December 18. The publication quoted a source saying the team had planned to begin promotions after Diwali but was now discussing a possible delay. Netflix has not officially announced the film’s release date, and the makers have yet to confirm whether the schedule will change.
“The team does not want to begin a campaign without knowing how the situation around Imran will play out,” the source told the publication.
The uncertainty comes at a crucial time for the actor, who has been away from leading roles in Hindi cinema for years. The romantic comedy was expected to mark his return to a genre that helped make him popular with audiences.
What is ‘Adhure Hum Adhure Tum’ about?
Directed by Danish Aslam, ‘Adhure Hum Adhure Tum’ stars Imran Khan and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. Imran has described the film as a mature, “age-appropriate” romantic comedy. It is also being viewed as a spiritual successor to his 2010 film ‘Break Ke Baad’, which starred him alongside Deepika Padukone.
The film’s music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar, with Vishal Dadlani and Alyssa Mendonsa among the singers. With the project expected to bring Imran back to the screen after a lengthy break, uncertainty over its release could affect the plans to reconnect him with audiences.
Why has Imran Khan been asked to leave India?
The controversy began on October 10, when Imran attended a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Demonstrators called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising concerns about electoral roll revisions and alleged irregularities. The Election Commission and government have faced criticism from protesters over the issue, while the wider dispute remains politically contested.
Imran, who holds US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was briefly detained by Mumbai Police during the demonstration and released later that day. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya subsequently complained to the police, alleging that the actor’s participation violated rules governing foreign nationals and OCI cardholders.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) later issued a notice directing Imran to leave India by October 28 under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. The actor is reportedly preparing to challenge the directive in court.
A look back at Imran Khan’s film career
Imran became a familiar face in Bollywood with his 2008 debut as a lead actor in ‘Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na’, in which he starred opposite Genelia D’Souza. The film’s youthful romance made him popular with a generation of moviegoers.
He followed it with films such as ‘I Hate Luv Storys’, ‘Break Ke Baad’, ‘Delhi Belly’, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ and ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’. While ‘Delhi Belly’ showcased his comic timing in a more unconventional role, his romantic comedies helped establish his screen image.
His last major theatrical release as a lead actor was ‘Katti Batti’ in 2015. Since then, fans have repeatedly expressed interest in seeing him return to acting. Whether the Netflix project arrives as planned or is pushed to a later date remains unclear.
