Mumbai: Legendary playback singer Alka Yagnik left fans emotional after a viral video showed her struggling to walk while receiving the Padma Bhushan, months after revealing that she had suffered permanent hearing damage due to a rare viral infection.

Her frail appearance at the award ceremony sparked fresh concern over her health, with many wondering if the singer's condition had worsened.

The 60-year-old singer was seen walking slowly with assistance as she went on stage to receive India's third-highest civilian honour from President Droupadi Murmu.

The clip quickly spread across social media, prompting an outpouring of prayers and messages from fans.

Addressing the concern, Alka shared an emotional note revealing that she had deliberately stayed away from public life for the last two years because of ongoing health issues.

'For the past two years, I have stayed away from the limelight, public appearances, and sharing most of my journey. Many of you knew I was going through a difficult health phase, and your love, prayers, messages, and unwavering support stood by me every step of the way,' she wrote.

Despite her health struggles, the singer said she did not want to miss the opportunity to personally receive the Padma Bhushan, describing the honour as one of the most meaningful moments of her career.

Calling the award a recognition not just of her work but also of the unwavering support of her listeners, Alka said she is slowly returning to normal life after a long period away from the spotlight.

'This moment is special because it is not only a recognition of my work but also a reminder of the strength that comes from love, hope, and resilience. I am slowly returning to normal life, and I wanted to be here today, not just for myself, but for everyone who has been part of this journey,' she said.

The singer also thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Government of India for conferring the prestigious honour.

What happened to Alka Yagnik?

Alka Yagnik first disclosed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss, a rare inner-ear condition believed to have been triggered by a viral infection.

The illness forced her to step away from singing assignments and public appearances.

In an earlier interview, the singer admitted that she has not fully recovered and continues to battle the condition.

She revealed that although music composers still approach her with offers, she is not yet in a position to resume work.

While her appearance at the Padma Bhushan ceremony marked an emotional return to the public eye, the viral video has also served as a reminder of the difficult health battle she continues to fight behind the scenes.
