Kolkata: Maha Ashtami, one of the most auspicious days of Durga Puja, is being observed on Monday, October 19, 2026, with prayers, traditional rituals and celebrations dedicated to Goddess Durga.

The day holds special significance for devotees, particularly in West Bengal, where it is marked by Pushpanjali, Kumari Puja in many communities and the sacred Sandhi Puja.

Devotees celebrate Maha Ashtami on the eighth day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin during Durga Puja and Sharadiya Navratri.

The occasion honours Goddess Durga as the embodiment of divine feminine power, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and the victory of righteousness over injustice.

Maha Ashtami 2026: Significance and rituals

Maha Ashtami commemorates Goddess Durga's divine power and her battle against evil forces. Devotees worship the goddess and seek her blessings for prosperity, good health, happiness, and protection from adversity.

One of the day's most important rituals is Pushpanjali, during which devotees offer flowers to the goddess while reciting prayers and mantras.

At many Durga Puja pandals, devotees gather in the morning to take part in the ritual, often dressed in traditional attire.

Kumari Puja, observed in several traditions, involves worshipping young girls as manifestations of the divine feminine. The ritual reflects the belief in womanhood's purity and sacred power.

Another important observance is Sandhi Puja, performed at the transition between Ashtami and Navami.

The ritual is associated with the legend of Goddess Chamunda's victory over the demons Chanda and Munda. In 2026, Sandhi Puja falls on October 19, with precise timings varying according to the panjika followed by individual puja committees.
