Earbuds and headphones are now part of everyday life, but overuse at high volume can lead to hearing loss. Know the expert’s opinion

Earphones and earbuds have now become inseparable from our daily lives. For many, it is almost impossible to go a day without them. Whether in public spaces, offices, or homes, the use of headphones, earplugs, and earpods has seen a surge. Nearly 90 per cent of people, especially those working long hours on computers, rely on earphones plugged into their ears throughout the day.
In a recent incident reported from Delhi, a young woman experienced partial hearing loss after using her earpods continuously for 8 hours. This case has raised concerns about the safety of using earphones for long durations.
While listening to music through earphones, in some situations, helps with focus and productivity, doing so at high volume for a long time is harmful. The wax present inside our ears plays a crucial role in protecting the ear canal. Excessive use of earphones can push this wax deeper, drying out the inner ear, which results in discomfort or damage.
Expert tips for safe earphone use
- Follow the 60/60 Rule: Use earphones for no more than 60 minutes at a stretch and keep the volume below 60 per cent of the maximum.
- Take breaks regularly: After using earphones for 30 to 60 minutes, take a 5 to 10-minute break to let your eardrums rest.
- Maintain hygiene: Clean your earbuds regularly using a soft brush and gently wipe the outer surface.
- Avoid deep insertion: Use headphones that sit over the ear rather than inserting earbuds deep into the ear canal.
- Lower the volume: Try to listen at a lower volume.
- Reduce usage gradually: Start limiting your daily earphone use.
Though these precautions may seem minor, adopting them can greatly benefit your ear health. Ultimately, managing and limiting earphone usage is not just a choice but a necessity.
