Keralites have several finger-licking fish fry recipes out of which this authentic ‘Meen Chuttulli’ or shallot seasoned fish fry gives you a fest of spices. It is absolutely yum, delicious, spiced with tangy masala. The highlight is the baked shallots, chillies and garlic. 

You could use Pomfrets (Avoli), Tuna (Choora) or Salmon (Kora) which taste extremely good. Also, as it consumes less oil, fat consumption is out of concern.

Ingredients

  • Fish: 500 gram
  • Red chilli: 10 numbers
  • Shallots: 50 gram
  • Garlic: 40 gram
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Coconut oil: 50 ml
  • Banana leaves: a small portion
  • Salt to taste 
  • Tamarind water as required 

Procedure

Bake the shallots, red chilli and garlic took in equal quantities on a skewer. Crush the baked items together with turmeric powder and salt. Add tamarind water and coconut oil as needed. Mix the items well and marinate the fish. 

Now, keep the marinated fish into a banana leaf with some curry leaves. Fold the leaf and grill in a Tawa in medium heat. Sprinkle some water as it gets heated. Cook both sides for 5 minutes.

Meen chuttulli is ready to serve with traditional tapioca or rice.
