
Idukki: When strawberry harvesting started in Kanthalloor surviving climate change, the farmers were thrilled to see high demand for the fruit. Strawberry fetched Rs 500 per kilogram on the very first day of harvest.
Strawberry harvest started in the farm of Kanthalloor Vettukad native Shelju Subrahmanian. The harvest was delayed by one month due to the incessant rain and snowfall in the past 3 months.
The strawberry saplings that belong to the Nabila variety which was brought from Shimla were planted in November 2020. A total of 10,000 saplings were brought by Shelju and other farmers.

Now the Horticorp supplies Camarosa strawberry saplings for Rs 13.50 per sapling. Upto one kilogram fruit can be harvested from one plant. However, climate change is likely to affect the production.
