NCBS-TIFR Bangalore invites applications for PhD GS 2026 in biological and physical sciences through national-level examinations.

National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (NCBS-TIFR), Bellary Road, Bangalore 560065, has invited applications for admission to the PhD Programme – GS 2026 Admission through National Level Examinations.
The research programs at NCBS cover a wide range of disciplines, on scales ranging from single molecules to ecosystems. Research initiatives that span multiple disciplines within Biology, as well as interactions with the Physical sciences, are encouraged.
Eligibility: Applicant should hold a Master’s degree in any branch of Biology/Agricultural Sciences/ Physics/ Chemistry/Computer Science/Mathematics or a 5-year degree (e.g. MBBS, BDS) or a professional Master’s degree (M.Pharm / M.Tech)
Applicant must have qualified in at least one of the following national-level scholarship/fellowship exams with more than the 95th percentile (valid as of 01 August 2026): CSIR / UGC-JRF, DBT, ICMR, DST-INSPIRE, or GATE.
Candidates in the top 10 percentiles of GATE, candidates who have qualified UGC/CSIR NET without JRF, may also be considered if they have at least 6 months of continuous research experience.
Fellowship: All selected candidates will be eligible to receive the regular JRF fellowship (Rs. 37,000/month + HRA as applicable) for the first two years, along with the standard annual contingency. Upon fulfilling the qualifications for registration, the fellowship will be upgraded to SRF (Rs. 42,000/month + HRA as applicable). Selected candidates may also avail themselves of their own national fellowship or the TIFR fellowship.
