Thiruvananthapuram: After ten long years, the government has finally decided to remove the serious references from the Plus one textbooks. The education department has decided to remove the anti-reservation reference in the ‘Social Work’ book for Plus one Humanities students. The book states that ‘financial reservation should be introduced instead of the one based on castes’. This is one of the eight solutions to control communalism.
The government has raised concerns that neither the government nor the teachers who taught the subject pointed out this erroneous statement. Minister V Sivankutty issued an urgent directive to SCERT to take corrective action.
The book is meant to be studied by students who have opted ‘Social work’ as a subject. After describing the consequences of communalism, eight solutions to curb this ‘scourge’ are offered by the text. Other suggestions include encouraging inter-religious study and worship, keeping religion out of politics and banning organisations that promote communal extremism.
