Kochi: The Ernakulam district collector Renu Raj IAS received flak from social media users on Thursday for a delayed declaration of holiday for educational institutions due to heavy rains.

The announcement through her official Facebook page came only at 8.23 am. Most of the students had left for the school thinking that there is no holiday. Usually, collectors declare holiday a day before or early in the morning, depending upon the situation.

After several social media users complained that the students have already reached school, forty minutes later she said the schools may continue to function if the students have arrived already. "No need to send the children back. However, it only has increased the criticism. Her Facebook page is flooded with comments.

The Thrissur collector had declared the holiday at 6.34 in the morning.

Educational institutions will remain shut in Thrissur, Ernakulam Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta on Thursday due to the rains. The holiday is applicable to all institutions except residential ones.
