Applications open for UG, PG and PhD programmes at Chennai Mathematical Institute for 2026.

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), H1, SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Kelambakkam, Tamil Nadu- 603103, a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences, has invited applications for admission to various Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and Research (PhD) Programmes for the August 2026 session.
Admission will be made to the following programmes in 2026–27: (i) B.S. (Hons.) in Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (4-year course), with an option to add a minor in Data Science for all these 4-year programmes. There is a 3-year exit option leading to a B.Sc. (ii) M.Sc. (2-year course).in Mathematics, Computer Science and Data Science (iii) PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics.
Eligibility: The outline of the eligibility for admission to different Programmes are as follows (i) All B.S. (Hons.) programmes:12th standard or equivalent (ii) M.Sc. in Mathematics: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech. etc.) with a strong background in Mathematics (iii) M.Sc. in Computer Science: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech. etc.) with a strong background in Computer Science (iv) M.Sc. in Data Science: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech. etc.) with a background in Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science (v) Ph.D. in Mathematics: B.E./B.Tech./ B.Sc.(Math)/ M.Sc.(Math) (vi) PhD in Computer Science: B.E./ B.Tech./M.Sc./ M.Tech. in Computer Science, Mathematics or Allied Areas (vii) PhD in Physics: M.Sc.(Physics). Selection: For all programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination to be conducted at Agartala, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Durgapur, Goa, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mohali, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Noida, Paschim Medinipur, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Siliguri, Srinagar, Tiruchi, Trivandrum, Visakhapatnam from 14:00-17:00/17:30 hrs (depending on the Programme) on May 2, 2026 (Saturday). There is a common entrance examination for all B.S. (Hons.) programmes. Applicants need not select a Bachelor's course at the time of applying. The choice is to be made after admission. Syllabus and past papers for all entrance exams are available at the link given on the website. Selection for all PhD programmes will involve an interview for shortlisted candidates. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. The Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.
Special cases: Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics are exempted from writing the BS entrance examination. For CMI's PhD programmes, one can also qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination through national level exams as follows: Mathematics - NBHM PhD Fellowship; Computer Science- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in Computer Science and Information Technology, or the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) in Theoretical Computer Science; Physics- GATE, JEST, UGC-CSIR NET in Physics. Such candidates should fill the CMI application form in full detail, pay the application fee and send an email to the specified email address given on the website, depending on the course/subject, with the CMI application details, attaching a scanned copy of the specified documents. They will receive a confirmation by email if they are exempted from writing the entrance exam.
Application: Application can be submitted online at https://www.cmi.ac.in/admissions/, latest by 23:59 IST on April 4, 2026 (Saturday). The application fee is also to be paid online by this time limit. Admit Cards will be available online on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Results will be announced approximately one month from the date of the entrance examination. The academic session will start on August 3, 2026.
