Toyota has issued a recall for more than one million vehicles in the United States due to defective rearview cameras that may display a blank or frozen image while reversing. The recall notice, published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 30, states that the malfunction could increase the risk of collisions.
The recall affects 1,024,407 vehicles across Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru models manufactured between 2020 and 2026.
What’s the Issue?
According to NHTSA, the rearview camera system in affected vehicles may fail to properly display the rear image. This could occur intermittently, leaving drivers with no visual assistance while backing up.

Voluntary recall in India
In India, Toyota has also launched a voluntary recall campaign covering three models — the Camry, Vellfire, and Land Cruiser. The recall affects 2,257 units of the Camry manufactured between July 18, 2024 and September 23, 2025, 1,862 units of the Vellfire built from July 19, 2023 to May 12, 2025, and 744 units of the Land Cruiser produced between May 31, 2023 and July 28, 2025.
The campaign aims to reprogram the Parking Assist ECU software, part of the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system responsible for displaying rearview images. Toyota confirmed that no related incidents have been reported in India so far.
As part of its commitment to safety and quality, Toyota will have its dealer representatives directly contact affected customers. Owners with concerns can reach out to their nearest dealership or call the Customer Assistance Centre at 1800-309-0001.
