YouTube is back as ‘full fix’ still pending after global crash: What went wrong

# Tech News

Video streaming platform YouTube suffered a large-scale global outage late on February 17, 2026, which continued into February 18.

More than 320,000 users in the United States alone reported problems on DownDetector, while reports in India peaked between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM IST, coinciding with a global spike of over 240,000 complaints.

Users across regions encountered the error message “Something went wrong”, unexpected account logouts, and difficulties accessing both the website and mobile app.

What problems did users face?

The disruption affected multiple core functions:

  • Accounts disappearing from devices and failed login attempts
  • Home page and Subscriptions feed not loading
  • Issues with YouTube TV and YouTube Studio dashboard
  • Direct video links opening but with slow playback or missing comments

While YouTube services were affected, other major Google services such as Gmail and Drive appeared to function normally during the disruption.

What likely went wrong?

Although no official technical explanation has been issued, the issue appeared to be server-side. Reports suggest the disruption may have been linked to YouTube’s authentication systems or backend services that connect Google accounts to YouTube profiles.

Because the outage was widespread and global, individual troubleshooting steps such as clearing cache or reinstalling the app were unlikely to resolve the issue.

Is there official confirmation?

As of the time service resumed, YouTube had not released a detailed public statement explaining the root cause. The official @TeamYouTube account on X typically issues updates once a fix is actively in progress, but no formal cause has yet been confirmed.

Why this outage matters

The disruption highlighted the scale of reliance on YouTube for entertainment, work, and content creation. With creators, viewers and advertisers dependent on the platform, even a few hours of downtime can cause widespread disruption and revenue impact.

Service has now stabilised in most regions, but the exact cause of the outage remains undisclosed.
