AI takes over! Google offers voluntary exit to staff not “all in”

Google’s Global Business Organisation (GBO) is offering voluntary exit packages to staff who feel they cannot fully commit to the company’s AI-driven mission, according to internal communications shared with employees.
The move is aimed at ensuring that the workforce is fully aligned with Google’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence, while providing a structured option for those who wish to leave voluntarily.
“We’re starting the year in a strong position thanks to everything you accomplished in 2025. But the game is dynamic, the pace is electric, and the stakes are high,” GBO Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler wrote in an email to staff, as reported by Business Insider. “Every GBO employee must be all in on embracing AI to have even greater impact. For those not enjoying the pace or ready to move on, a voluntary exit programme is available.”
The voluntary exit programme (VEP) applies to select GBO roles in the United States, including solutions teams, corporate development, and other internal business functions. Certain roles, such as large customer-facing teams, are excluded to minimise disruption to operations and client relations.
This is Google’s third voluntary exit programme in a year, following rounds in June 2025 targeting multiple US departments amid a return-to-office push, and in October 2025 for YouTube staff amid organisational restructuring. Google’s Chief People Officer, Fiona Cicconi, said that the VEP has been “actually quite successful” in streamlining teams and reducing unnecessary layers. “It’s interesting to see who’s taking a VEP. Sometimes people want a career break, or to take care of family members,” she said.
The programme underscores the growing emphasis on AI at Google and the expectation that employees not only adapt to technological shifts but actively embrace them. Analysts note that such initiatives can shape corporate culture, ensuring that the workforce driving AI initiatives is fully committed, while also offering a humane exit option rather than involuntary layoffs.
Industry observers also see the VEP as part of a broader trend in tech companies, where rapid transformation and AI integration are changing career trajectories, forcing employees to weigh alignment with corporate strategy against personal and professional priorities.
Background:
The GBO is a central part of Google’s operational structure, overseeing core business functions, strategy, and internal solutions. The voluntary exit programme has been used strategically to maintain alignment with company priorities without resorting to sudden layoffs. With AI becoming central to Google’s vision, staff who feel unprepared or unwilling to engage in this shift are given a financial incentive to leave voluntarily, allowing the company to maintain agility and focus.
