India strike twice in men's javelin, Yashvir takes silver and Rohit bronze at Asian Games

India secured a double podium finish in men's javelin at the Asian Games as Yashvir Singh won silver and Rohit Yadav took bronze, giving the country two medals in the event.

Yashvir produced his biggest throw of the competition when it mattered most. The 24-year-old from Haryana sent the javelin 85.72m in his sixth and final attempt, a personal best that lifted him past fellow Indian Rohit Yadav and into second place.

Rohit, 25, finished with a best effort of 84.35m to claim the bronze medal. The Uttar Pradesh athlete had been unable to finish on the podium at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games earlier this year.

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage took the gold medal with a throw of 88.33m.

The two Indian throwers entered the competition carrying much of the country's hopes in the event after reigning champion Neeraj Chopra pulled out of the Asian Games because of a late ligament injury. Chopra is also a two-time Olympic medallist.

Yashvir had already put himself on the podium at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this year, where he won bronze. He added another major medal to his record with his final-attempt surge at the Asian Games.

Pakistan's reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth with a season-best throw of 80.29m.
