USA advances to Round of 16 after 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina

Santa Clara: The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) has secured a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in a tense encounter at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara.
A Decisive Performance
The victory, which marks only the second time in the nation's history that the men’s team has won a World Cup knockout match, was defined by clinical finishing and high-intensity pressing.
Folarin Balogun proved instrumental throughout the evening. After seeing an earlier effort in the 31st minute ruled out for offside, the striker finally broke the deadlock in the 45th minute, capitalising on a loose ball inside the penalty area to fire a low shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
Despite the hosts dominating large portions of the match, the encounter remained finely poised. In the 82nd minute, Malik Tillman extended the American lead, netting a crucial second goal that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Moments of Controversy
The match was not without its challenges for the hosts. In the 64th minute, Folarin Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review, leaving the United States to navigate the final half-hour with ten men. The dismissal ensures that the goalscorer will be unavailable for the upcoming Round of 16 fixture.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, appearing in their first-ever World Cup knockout stage, struggled to find a breakthrough against a disciplined American defence, though they posed a consistent threat on the counter-attack. The result marks the end of an historic run for the Bosnian side, who had previously exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout rounds.

Looking Ahead
By securing this victory, the United States has set up a highly anticipated clash in the next phase of the tournament. The team will now look to build on this momentum, despite the setback of losing a key player to suspension.
As the tournament progresses, the focus for the USMNT will shift towards their next opponents, Belgium, with the team aiming to continue their campaign on home soil. Belgium qualified for the Round of 16 after beating Senegal in a 3-2 thriller.
