CSK star MS Dhoni injured, likely to miss opening matches of IPL 2026

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a major blow ahead of the new season, with veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni ruled out for two weeks due to a calf strain.
The franchise confirmed the development in an official statement, saying Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation and will miss the initial phase of the Indian Premier League 2026.
In its statement, CSK said, “MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026. Get well soon, Thala!”
The absence of Dhoni, one of the most experienced players in the league, is expected to impact the team’s balance, especially in the crucial opening matches.

Dhoni’s leadership and finishing ability have been central to CSK’s success over the years. His presence behind the stumps and tactical acumen make him a key figure in high-pressure situations.
Dhoni’s role in CSK and IPL
Dhoni has continued playing in the IPL ever since retiring from international cricket in 2020. The 44-year-old remains the de facto leader of CSK, despite Ruturaj Gaikwad being the official captain, and has been a central figure in the franchise since 2008, except during the period the team was suspended.
In previous seasons, Dhoni typically bats lower down the order, providing the finishing touch in tight matches.
Dhoni has faced recurring knee issues since retiring from international cricket and underwent surgery in 2023. Maintaining match fitness has become a challenge, especially since the IPL is now the only competitive cricket he plays regularly.
The calf injury is a fresh setback, adding to the fitness concerns for the veteran player.
CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30.
