Kingstown: Afghanistan's journey to their first-ever T20 World Cup semifinal has been a testament to their resilience and the visionary prediction of cricketing legend Brian Lara, whom skipper Rashid Khan proudly acknowledged as instrumental in their success.

Rashid expressed his gratitude to Lara, recalling their encounter at a welcome event where he assured Lara that Afghanistan would not disappoint. Lara's pre-tournament prediction that Afghanistan could reach the semifinals resonated deeply with Rashid and his team, inspiring them to prove the cricketing icon right.

"Afghanistan, they are capable of getting into the (last) four," Lara had confidently stated, a foresight that fueled Rashid and his team with added determination.

The road to the semifinals was paved with significant victories, notably over heavyweights New Zealand and defending champions Australia. These wins fortified Afghanistan's belief in their capabilities, setting the stage for their ultimate triumph over Bangladesh in the Super 8 clash.

Reflecting on their strategy against Bangladesh, Rashid acknowledged the initial batting challenge that limited them to 115/5. However, their bowlers, led by Naveen Ul Haq and Rashid himself, rose to the occasion, defending the total with precision and securing an exhilarating eight-run win.

"Our bowlers have been outstanding throughout the tournament, especially Naveen and Farooqi with their early breakthroughs," Rashid praised, highlighting the pivotal role of quick starts in T20 matches.

Despite rain interruptions that truncated the match, Rashid emphasised the team's mental preparedness to adapt and execute their game plan effectively, aiming to take all 10 wickets and secure victory.

Looking ahead to the semifinals against South Africa on June 27, Rashid anticipated widespread celebrations back home in Afghanistan, underscoring the significance of this achievement for the nation.

"This World Cup journey has been monumental for us, reminiscent of our successes at the U-19 level. Words can't describe the feeling back home," Rashid remarked, emphasising the joy and pride felt across Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto lamented his team's batting inconsistencies, acknowledging their failure to capitalise on strong bowling performances throughout the tournament.

"As a batting unit, we made poor decisions, especially in the middle overs," Shanto admitted, highlighting the need for improvement in their approach.

While Bangladesh reflected on missed opportunities, Rashid and Afghanistan basked in the glory of their historic achievement, driven by Lara's prophetic vision and their unwavering determination to excel on cricket's global stage. Agencies
