Trump says US will ‘win’ Iran war soon and warns fresh strikes are possible
US President Donald Trump said he expects the United States to “win” the war with Iran soon, while leaving open the possibility of further strikes as Washington and Tehran continue to exchange threats and explore diplomatic channels.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he believed the US would win the conflict “very soon”. He also linked an end to the war with a potential decline in global oil prices.
“I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to win this war very soon,” Trump said, adding that oil prices could fall sharply once the conflict ends.
Asked whether the US could resume strikes against Iran, Trump said it was possible but declined to provide further details.
Strait of Hormuz remains a major flashpoint
The standoff between Washington and Tehran has also centred on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments.
Iran has indicated that it will not reopen the strait unless US economic pressure is eased. Trump rejected an Iranian proposal involving a seven-day timeline for reopening the waterway, while Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran would not abandon its conditions.
Oil prices rose by more than 1% on Monday after Trump rejected the proposal, according to the report.
US and Iran keep diplomatic channels open
Despite the military rhetoric, indirect diplomatic efforts are continuing.
Qatari mediators are expected to hold separate discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US officials. The talks are expected to examine an amended version of Iran’s seven-day proposal concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the wider conflict.
Reports have also said mediators are pressing Iran to make concessions on its nuclear programme as a possible route towards restarting negotiations with Washington. Iranian officials, however, have indicated that Tehran believes it can withstand continued US pressure.
UK airbase security adds another dimension
The conflict has also raised security concerns in the UK. British police questioned five men after they were detained near RAF Fairford, a military airbase used by the US in operations against Iran.
The men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences and were later released on bail. Iran has denied involvement in the suspected plot.
UK authorities have said the investigation remains ongoing and have not confirmed the motive behind the incident.
The latest developments leave several issues unresolved, including the future of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme and the possibility of renewed US military strikes.
While Trump has indicated that he expects the conflict to end soon, Washington and Tehran remain divided over the conditions for negotiations. Diplomatic efforts through regional mediators are continuing alongside the military and economic pressure.
