Massachusetts declares August 15 as India Day; honours diaspora
Boston: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed August 15 as India Day, recognising the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to the state's social, economic and cultural life, and encouraging residents to observe the occasion.
In the proclamation, issued on August 1, Healey highlighted the role of Indian-American community organisations and advocates in promoting civic engagement, cultural exchange and mutual understanding through annual Independence Day celebrations and community service initiatives.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also issued a similar proclamation declaring August 15 as India Day. She welcomed the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and acknowledged the visit of INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON 250 celebrations.
The governor's proclamation noted that August 15, 2026, marks the 79th anniversary of India's independence from British colonial rule in 1947, describing it as a historic milestone that laid the foundation for the world's largest democracy.
It also recognised the global Indian diaspora, stating that more than 36 million people of Indian origin live outside India, including over five million in the United States, where they have made significant contributions to the country's social, economic and civic life.
Describing India as an ancient civilisation and a vibrant cultural mosaic, the proclamation highlighted the country's diversity in ethnicities, religions, languages, traditions, cuisine and geography, while noting the unity that binds them together.
Healey further acknowledged the contributions of Indian-Americans in Massachusetts across sectors including medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service, saying they have enriched the Commonwealth's cultural and economic landscape.
The proclamation also recognised the continued efforts of the Indian-American community in Massachusetts to commemorate India's Independence Day through events celebrating the country's cultural heritage, democratic values and commitment to peace and progress.
