Israel reportedly strikes Iran just after Trump’s ceasefire announcement

Tehran: Just hours after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, fresh airstrikes were reported across multiple locations in Iran, according to Iranian state media.

Press TV, Iran’s international news network, reported that the Israeli military launched a series of coordinated attacks on Tuesday, shortly after Trump posted on Truth Social that both nations had agreed to a "complete and total ceasefire."

In his statement, Trump claimed that Iran would begin implementing the ceasefire first, followed by Israel, with hostilities expected to halt entirely within a 24-hour window. “CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!,” he wrote. Trump described the conflict as “THE 12 DAY WAR,” suggesting it would formally end after each side observed sequential 12-hour ceasefire periods.

He added that the world would salute the official end of hostilities once both phases were completed, praising both countries for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence” in reaching a resolution.

However, Iran's foreign minister said that as long as Israel stopped its attacks by 4 a.m. local Tehran time Tuesday, Iran would halt its own.

Background on the conflict

The hostilities erupted on June 13, when Israel launched a massive aerial offensive dubbed Operation Rising Lion, targeting several Iranian military and nuclear installations. In a swift response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched Operation True Promise 3, a wide-scale missile and drone assault targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres.

The conflict widened when the United States entered the fray over the weekend. Under Operation Midnight Hammer, US forces conducted targeted airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday. In retaliation, Iran struck back by launching missiles at American military bases in the region, including the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US installation in the region, CNN reported.
