A crew member of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena, Hamed Momeneh, has described what he says was an unprovoked attack on the warship while it was transiting through the Indian Ocean.

According to his account, the vessel had previously visited the Indian port of Visakhapatnam to participate in a naval exercise before beginning its return journey. He claims the incident occurred in international waters between approximately 3:00 and 3:30 a.m., when the ship was suddenly struck without prior warning.

Momeneh alleges that the assault was carried out by a submarine and that a torpedo hit the vessel while all 104 crew members were at their posts. He stated that, despite the impact, there were no immediate casualties and no abandonment of the ship during the initial phase of the incident.

He further claimed the attack was deliberately intended to cause loss of life rather than solely damage to the vessel, though no independent verification of these assertions has been provided.

According to his account, the crew remained with the ship until around 11:00 p.m., after which they were forced to enter the sea and swim towards areas near the coast of Sri Lanka.

The claims have not been independently confirmed, and no official statement from the United States or other involved parties was included in the account provided.
