Thrissur: At a time when uncertainty continues over whether fireworks will be part of this year’s Thrissur Pooram, Paramekkavu Devaswom has indicated that the festival may be conducted without fireworks. The suggestion comes amid wider discussions following the recent blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode that claimed at least 14 lives.

The situation has placed both major Devaswoms associated with the festival under pressure. The fireworks unit linked to the tragedy is licensed to Thiruvambady Devaswom, while Paramekkavu Devaswom has separately come under a stop memo issued by the Palakkad District Collector on its fireworks manufacturing activities in the wake of the explosion. Together, these developments have contributed to uncertainty around fireworks arrangements for the festival.

Paramekkavu suggests fireworks-free format

In this context, Paramekkavu Devaswom has proposed that Thrissur Pooram be held without fireworks this year. The proposal reflects a sentiment that emerged during internal discussions and also draws reference to the 2006 incident in which a fireworks accident occurred in the vicinity, though the festival rituals continued as scheduled at that time.

The Devaswom noted that despite the 2006 incident, all ritual elements of the Pooram, including Kudamattam, were conducted without disruption. It added that similar considerations are being reflected in current discussions.

Alongside the suggestion to avoid full fireworks displays, symbolic fireworks have also been mentioned as a possible alternative. The Devaswom has further stated that arrangements relating to disposal of already manufactured firecracker materials will also need to be addressed.

Preparations and stakeholder discussions

Paramekkavu Devaswom representatives said approximately ₹75 lakh has already been spent on preparations, which have involved nearly nine months of coordinated work by multiple individuals. They added that there is a prevailing sentiment among stakeholders towards conducting all ritualistic aspects of the festival as usual.

The Devaswom confirmed that its position will be presented at the government meeting scheduled for 10.30 am on Thursday at the Thrissur Collectorate, where the matter is expected to be discussed further.
