Severe heatwave: Kerala sizzles as districts experience record-breaking temperatures

Thiruvananthapuram: Kottayam and Kochi’s Nedumbassery have recorded exceptionally high temperatures this February, marking a new record for the month. Kottayam recorded a temperature of 38.6°C, surpassing the previous February record of 38.5°C, which was set on February 28, 2020, and February 27, 2024. At Nedumbassery airport, the temperature reached 37.6°C, also a February record since 2000.

Meanwhile, heavy rain is forecast for districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta on Saturday. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued a yellow alert for these areas, warning residents of potential downpours.

In Kannur, a remarkable 39.8°C was recorded last Thursday, with temperatures expected to remain high, reaching 39°C again on Friday. Earlier in the week, Kannur recorded a staggering 40.4°C.

The weather department has indicated that temperatures in the state could rise by up to 2-3°C over the next few days, further intensifying the heatwave in Kerala.
