Kochi: The death of Mihir Ahmed, a 15-year-old boy who jumped from a flat in Trippunithura, has led to growing concerns over ragging in schools. The General Education Department is now investigating the incident, with a particular focus on whether Mihir was a victim of ragging prior to his death.

On Monday, the Director of the General Education Department arrived in Ernakulam to take statements from individuals concerned, as part of the ongoing investigation. The key question is whether Mihir was subjected to ragging while at school, leading to his tragic death. The Education Department has vowed to ensure justice is served, with a clear focus on the investigation.

Possible POCSO case

The General Education Department is also examining whether Mihir's rights were violated under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with any other potential legal violations. Mihir’s parents are steadfast in their belief that he was a victim of ragging, which they claim led to his suicide.

In a statement made before the Director of General Education, S Shanavas, Mihir’s mother made strong allegations against the schools her son attended. She has accused both Thiruvaniyoor Global Public School and Gems Academy of being complicit in the bullying and mistreatment of Mihir.

Screenshots, evidence provided

Mihir’s mother presented screenshots of phone chats and statements from other children as evidence to support her claims. She said that she wanted the world to know what happened to Mihir and that she hoped her son’s death would serve as a warning to prevent other parents from experiencing the same tragedy.

The investigation continues at the Education Department office in Kakkanad, where the Director has been collecting evidence. Representatives from the schools accused of mistreatment were also present during the proceedings. The Director is expected to submit a report to the government shortly, which will hopefully shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Mihir’s death.
