Man accidentally pierces leg with iron rod while searching for crabs; stable after surgery

Pariyaram: In a freak incident, an iron rod that is used to capture crabs pierced through a young man’s leg. The man was taken to the Kannur government medical college hospital where fire brigade officers helped cut the wire protruding outside before the doctors surgically removed the rest of the rod from the man’s leg.
The rod was removed from M.C Harish’s (25) leg. The incident happened early Monday morning. Harish accidentally put the rod through his own leg when prodding the ground to catch crabs.
Harish, who lost consciousness due to blood loss, was taken to the hospital, rod intact, by the locals. Since the rod was long, it was not possible to shift Harish to the operation theatre from the emergency department. That is when help was sought from the Payyanur fire department.
A team led by fire and rescue officer Shinoj reached the emergency department of the hospital and cut the rod. Harish, who is a temporary driver at Andoor municipal Buds school, is recovering after the surgery.
