What KSRTC-SIMCO’s mega scrapping centre means for vehicle owners

Kerala Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar laid the foundation stone for the KSRTC-SIMCO Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Edappal.
The project is a joint venture between Kerala State Road Transport Corporation and SIMCO, and forms part of the Government of India’s RVSF initiative aimed at promoting scientific vehicle recycling and environmental protection.
The minister described the project as a milestone in the state’s vehicle recycling sector.
The centre is being developed at a cost of Rs 30 crore on three acres of land adjacent to KSRTC’s Edappal Regional Workshop.
Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to scientifically scrap up to 100 metric tonnes of vehicles per day. Officials said the project is expected to be completed within eight months and could generate an annual turnover of around Rs 300 crore in its first year.
The Edappal facility will cater to central Kerala districts including Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Idukki.
The minister said KSRTC will also establish similar facilities for southern and northern Kerala in partnership with SILK, a state public sector undertaking.
According to officials, the initiative aims to curb illegal and unscientific vehicle scrapping practices that harm the environment. Once operational, scrapping activities in central Kerala will be conducted with full approvals from central and state authorities. SIMCO directors stated that authorised collection centres will be opened across the five districts to make the process more accessible for vehicle owners.
Vehicles scrapped through RVSF centres will receive fair and transparent market prices. Owners will also be eligible for tax exemptions and other central government benefits when purchasing a new vehicle through the Certificate of Deposit (COD) system.
Project officials emphasised that vehicle recycling supports environmental protection and the circular economy by ensuring scientific recovery of metals and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
With its scale and processing capacity, the KSRTC-SIMCO RVSF in Edappal is set to become the largest registered vehicle scrapping facility in South India under the national vehicle recycling framework.
