Kochi Metro to Angamaly via Airport: DPR submitted for Phase 3 expansion

Kochi: A major expansion of the Kochi Metro network is moving a step closer, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the line from Aluva to Angamaly via the airport submitted to the state government.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has prepared and submitted the DPR for the proposed third phase of the metro project. The new corridor, which will pass through the Nedumbassery airport, is expected to cover around 18 kilometres from Aluva to Angamaly.

One of the key features of the proposed route is an underground stretch. Around three kilometres of the new metro corridor is expected to run underground, according to the project details. However, the number of stations planned along the route has not yet been specified.

The next major step will be securing approval from the Centre. The state government is expected to submit the DPR to the Union government, with financial approval for the project to be granted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

If the Phase 3 extension becomes a reality, passengers travelling from Tripunithura could reach the airport directly by metro. At present, Kochi Metro operates on a 27-km corridor between Aluva and Tripunithura.

Meanwhile, construction is underway on the metro corridor connecting Kaloor and Infopark. The work is expected to be completed by August next year.

The proposed Angamaly extension could also make daily travel easier for thousands of commuters travelling to Kochi from Angamaly and nearby areas.

There have also been demands for a further expansion under a proposed fourth phase. The proposal calls for extending the metro from Tripunithura to Kakkanad via Irumpanam, creating a circular corridor.
