Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is currently enduring a severe heat wave, with temperatures rising above seasonal norms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for 12 districts, warning of intense heat over the coming days. Palakkad and Kollam may record highs of 38°C, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Ernakulam could see temperatures around 37°C. Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod are expected to reach 36°C.

While most regions are hot and humid, isolated summer rain is possible in certain districts, including Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Wayanad, and Kannur, which are under a Green Alert. Satellite imagery indicates that rain could affect both North and South Kerala in the coming days, potentially lowering temperatures and providing brief relief. Thunderstorm precautions are advised for the affected areas.

Authorities have issued safety instructions for the public to prevent sunstroke and dehydration. Direct exposure to sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM should be avoided. Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothing, and use umbrellas or caps while stepping outdoors. Educational institutions must ensure proper ventilation and availability of drinking water for students.

The ongoing summer conditions have also raised fire risks in markets, waste disposal sites, and forest areas. Residents, tourists, and outdoor workers, especially in forest-adjacent areas, have been cautioned to remain vigilant. Fire audits and preventive measures are recommended, while vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and patients are urged to take extra care.

To stay safe during the heat wave, officials advise sticking to shade, consuming water-rich foods, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and staying alert to sudden weather changes, including thunderstorms and gusty winds. Protective gear such as sunglasses, caps, and umbrellas is recommended when venturing outside.

The heat wave is expected to continue at least until March 26, though intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms may offer temporary relief in select districts. Residents are urged to follow official guidelines and take precautions to ensure health and safety during this period.
