Kerala on five-day lightning alert amid forecast of rain and strong winds

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Meteorological Department has placed Kerala under a five-day lightning alert starting May 4, following a forecast from the Central Weather Department indicating severe weather conditions across isolated regions of the state.
According to the department, isolated places are expected to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h from May 4 to 6. The intensity is set to increase on May 7 and 8, with wind speeds likely to reach 40 to 50 km/h.
Authorities have stressed that lightning poses serious threats to both human and animal life and can cause significant damage to electrical and communication systems. In view of this, the public has been urged to exercise caution and follow safety measures whenever thunderclouds appear.
Key safety recommendations include staying indoors during thunderstorms, keeping away from windows and electrical appliances, and refraining from using landline phones. The public is also advised against standing under trees, parking vehicles beneath trees, or playing in open areas, especially on terraces. Those travelling on two-wheelers or open vehicles are advised to stop and seek shelter until the storm passes.
The department emphasised that lightning is often not visible until it strikes, making it imperative for people to act on early signs such as cloud formation. With the forecast of worsening conditions later in the week, residents are advised to stay updated with official bulletins and prioritise safety during this period.
