Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is likely to receive the southwest monsoon earlier than usual this year, with the India Meteorological Department indicating that weather conditions are currently favourable for its advancement towards the state ahead of schedule.

The monsoon generally reaches Kerala on 1 June each year. However, present conditions suggest that its arrival could take place several days earlier.

According to the weather department, favourable conditions are also developing for the monsoon to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the end of this week. Normally, the monsoon arrives there around 20 May, but this year it is expected to reach the islands by around 15 May.

Monsoon may reach Kerala in final week of May

Meteorological officials said that after reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the southwest monsoon usually takes around 10 days to advance to Kerala.

If no adverse weather conditions develop in the coming days, monsoon-related rainfall could begin in Kerala during the last week of May. However, the department has not yet issued its final forecast regarding the exact date of onset over the state.

Heavy rain and strong winds forecast

The weather department has also forecast heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala from 14 May onwards.

Strong winds with speeds between 40 and 50 kmph are likely in several areas during this period. Officials indicated that the intensity of rainfall may decrease temporarily after the initial spell before becoming active again towards the end of May.

Yellow alerts issued in several districts

The department has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in multiple districts over the next few days.

On 14 May, yellow alerts have been announced for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

For 15 May, warnings have been issued in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.

On 16 May, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall, prompting yellow alerts in those regions as well.
