IMD forecasts extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala; Red alert in various districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in upcoming hours. Following this, a red alert has been issued in Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod on Saturday.

IMD has forecast the formation of a low pressure area over North East Bay of Bengal by September 20, which would bring above normal rainfall in the state in coming days.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has warned the government systems and public to exercise caution. Strong winds are forecast and people are asked to stay vigilant in view of accidents due to uprooting of tress and broken electric lines.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till September 21.

Red, Orange and Yellow alerts have been issued in various districts:

Red alert

Sept 19 – Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod

Sept 20 – Idukki, Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod

Orange alert

Sept 19 – Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad

Sept 20 - Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Wayanad

Sept 21 - Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod

Yellow alert

Sept 19 – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta

Sept 20 - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta

Sept 21 - Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta

Sept 22 – Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod

KSDMA, in a Facebook post, has also issued guidelines to be followed in view of any adversity due to rain and waterlogging amid Covid pandemic.
