GPS in public transport vehicles soon
The government is planning to strictly implement its decision to install Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices in public transport vehicles and vehicles transporting students.
Earlier, several motor vehicle unions had opposed the decision to install GPS in public transport vehicles. This delayed the government project.
GPS is being installed in public transport vehicles to monitor traffic violations, ensure safety of women and children travelling in such vehicles and to provide assistance to vehicles and its occupants during times of distress.
Directions
- The regional transport officer (enforcement) should be appointed as the nodal officer to inspect GPS systems
- Motor vehicle inspectors should be appointed to inspect GPS systems
- Vehicles carrying Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) will also need safety meter to help locate the vehicle
- Vehicles of educational institutions must have VLTD
- Mini control rooms will be opened in all regional transport offices in district level to inspect GPS systems and take action
- Reports regarding vehicle inspection should be presented before a meeting chaired by the transport commissioner every month.
