Ernakulam ranked among 50 cities in the world with most traffic congestion

Ernakulam has earned a spot in the global rankings for traffic congestion, securing 50th place in the latest list of cities with the most traffic congestion. The data, compiled by the TomTom Traffic Index, highlights how India continues to grapple with severe traffic challenges.
Barranquilla in Colombia tops the list, followed by Indian cities Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune in second, third, and fourth places, respectively. London ranks fifth.
The TomTom Traffic Index, which tracks and evaluates traffic conditions in 62 countries, includes several Indian cities in its top ranks for congestion. Indian cities appear on the list of 500 cities.
Traffic delays in major Indian cities
The traffic situation in these cities is alarming. In Kolkata, it takes an average of 34 minutes and 33 seconds to cover just 10 km during peak hours. Bengaluru fares similarly, with an average travel time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds for the same distance. In Ernakulam, however, it takes 28 minutes and 30 seconds to cover 10 km during rush hour, still a significant delay for daily commuters.
In Bengaluru, residents lose an average of 117 hours per year on the roads due to traffic delays. In Ernakulam, the average time lost is 88 hours annually.
