Thiruvananthapuram: Dr ES Ruwais, whose arrested was recorded for abetting the suicide of a PG medico in Thiruvanathapuram, is known to be a popular leader among the student community. He was the president of the PG association (Thiruvananthapuram medical college unit). He was evicted from the post following his involvement in the death of Dr Shahna, a girl he had promised to marry.

A viral video of Ruwais is currently doing rounds on social media now. In the video the infuriated leader can be seen condemning Veena George’s comments on the murder of Dr Vandana Das. Netizens are shocked over the double standard of the young doctor. The man who once stood up for the doctors is now under police custody for abetting the suicide of a young medico. That’s quite a paradox.

Ruwais and his family are accused of demanding exorbitant dowry from Dr Shahna’s family.

Ruwais, who is a native of Karunagappally, did his PG in the ortho department at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college. Shahna who committed suicide studied in the surgery department. Her brother Jasim Nas told the media on Thursday that his sister decided to marry Ruwais thinking he was a good man. Shahna was impressed by Ruwais who was a popular student leader.

Ruwais was taken into custody by the Thiruvananthapuram medical college police from Karunagappally. He was booked under Dowry Prohibition Act and for abetment of suicide. He was under police observation ever since the suicide. The police caught hold of the accused before he could procure an anticipatory bail.

Ruwais, who was active on social media, made his Instagram account private yesterday. He removed his profile picture as well. The accused is also known to have deleted all his Whatsapp chats so far. However, the police are in touch with the cyber cell to retrieve the information.

Ruwais’s arrest was recorded after interrogation. He will be produced in front of the magistrate this evening after a medical examination.

Shahna had been engaged to her friend Ruwais, but the marriage hit a roadblock due to exorbitant dowry requests. The groom's family had demanded 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car, which her family couldn't meet. Shahna who slipped into depression committed suicide on Monday.
