In a troubling escalation of tensions ahead of the West Bengal Assembly polls, a firing incident was reported late Sunday night from Gosaba in South 24 Parganas district, leaving one person, reportedly a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker, injured.

According to a report by ANI, the injured individual was rushed to a hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.

The incident has triggered fresh concerns over law and order in the run-up to voting, with just days left for polling on April 23.

The ruling TMC has alleged that the attack was politically motivated. Party leader Raja Gazi claimed that leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were behind the firing, escalating the political temperature in an already volatile electoral environment.

“We have filed a complaint with the police and informed the Election Commission observer. The police have reached the spot, and an investigation is underway. We want strict action against those responsible,” Gazi said.

Police officials have initiated a probe into the incident, though no arrests have been confirmed so far. The BJP has not yet responded to the allegations.

The episode underscores the fragile security situation in parts of the state as campaigning peaks.

West Bengal has historically witnessed episodes of poll-related violence, and Sunday night’s firing is likely to intensify scrutiny on the administration’s ability to ensure a peaceful vote.

With the April 23 polling date approaching, the incident adds to growing anxieties over voter safety and the conduct of free and fair elections in the region.
