TVK rolls out ‘Target Karur’ campaign amid Vijay’s CBI probe into stampede

Karur: Seeking to rebuild its public outreach after the tragic stampede in Karur last year, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-turned-politician Vijay has launched a “Target Karur” poll campaign aimed at strengthening the party’s presence in the constituency.
The party had kept a relatively low profile following the stampede at an election rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, which left 41 people dead. The incident occurred during a gathering addressed by Vijay and cast a shadow over the party’s political activities.
In the months since, TVK has gradually resumed public meetings and rallies in different parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Meanwhile, Vijay is facing a probe into the stampede being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. The investigating agency has issued a third summons asking him to appear for questioning in connection with the incident.

On March 13, TVK functionaries led by Karur district secretary V P Mathiyazhagan formally launched the “Target Karur” campaign after offering prayers at temples in Kodangipatti, a locality in the Karur constituency.
The constituency is also the home turf of V. Senthil Balaji, a leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and a former state minister.
As part of the campaign, party workers carried out door-to-door outreach to familiarise voters with TVK’s election symbol, the “whistle”.
According to party leaders, the “Target Karur” initiative is intended to expand TVK’s organisational presence in the constituency and mobilise public support ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
