‘I won’t move an inch’: Rahul Gandhi vows full support to farmers against Modi govt

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, former Congress president and MP from Wayanad, posted on social media that he will withstand all measures—including filing an FIR, registering a legal case, or raising a privilege motion agianst him in Parliament—to protect farmers’ interests.

In his statement, Gandhi said that any trade agreement or government policy that threatens farmers’ livelihoods or weakens India’s food security is “anti-farmer.” He acknowledged that the government may pursue a privilege motion against him for his remarks but emphasised that he would remain steadfast. “You can do whatever against me, I won’t move an inch,” he said, signalling his firm support for farmers.

Parliamentary context:

Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, have raised concerns in the Lok Sabha about agricultural trade deals, import-export policies, and their potential impact on domestic prices, crop demand, and farmers’ income.

Congress and other opposition parties have used debates, question hours, and privilege motions to hold the government accountable for policies perceived as harmful to agriculture.

Gandhi’s mention of FIRs or legal action refers to measures outside Parliament to ensure official investigation into trade deals or policies considered anti-farmer.

Agricultural context:

India’s agriculture sector employs nearly 40% of the workforce and is central to national food security. Farmers’ concerns include Minimum Support Price (MSP), market access, and international trade agreements.

In recent years, major farmer protests, including those in 2020–21 against farm laws, have highlighted political and social sensitivities around agriculture.

Trade agreements affecting crop imports, exports, or international pricing have often been points of contention between the government and opposition leaders. Gandhi’s statement reflects ongoing scrutiny of such agreements and their impact on small and marginal farmers.

Rahul Gandhi’s post reaffirms Congress’s position that farmers’ livelihoods must be protected. It also underscores his willingness to face parliamentary or legal challenges while continuing to advocate for agricultural interests.
