More than a bypoll: How Bankipur rattled the BJP's Bihar strategy

For the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the result in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll is about much more than the loss of a single seat. The defeat has ended the party's uninterrupted three-decade dominance in one of its safest urban constituencies, handed Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor his first electoral victory, and raised fresh questions over the BJP's political grip in Bihar ahead of the next Assembly election.

Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes, polling 64,151 votes against Kumar's 44,827, according to Election Commission figures. The bypoll recorded a voter turnout of 34.24 per cent.

The result is particularly significant because Bankipur had remained with the BJP continuously since 1995, making it one of the party's longest-held strongholds in Bihar. BJP leader Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha first represented the constituency and was later held for five consecutive terms by his son, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.

In the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, Nabin had retained Bankipur by a margin of more than 50,000 votes. Meanwhile, the latest verdict is also a landmark moment for Kishor, whose Jan Suraaj Party failed to win a seat in the 2025 Assembly elections despite campaigning extensively on issues such as education, employment and governance. The Bankipur victory gives the fledgling party its first electoral breakthrough and positions it as a more serious player in Bihar politics.

Political observers also view the result as a setback for Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who took charge earlier this year after Nitish Kumar stepped down. The BJP had hoped to consolidate its position under Choudhary's leadership, making the loss of one of its strongest urban seats particularly embarrassing.

Celebrations broke out at the Jan Suraaj headquarters in Patna soon after the counting trends turned decisively in Kishor's favour.

In a post on X, the party said, "In democracy, the fortress belongs only to the people. Thank you, Bankipur--this is your victory."

Kishor described the bypoll verdict as a message from Bihar's voters to the BJP's central leadership.

"It was an attempt by the people of Bihar to send a message to the BJP's central leadership that they should appoint a good person as the Chief Minister of Bihar."

The campaign was not without controversy. Ahead of counting, Kishor alleged that police had detained more than 16 Jan Suraaj leaders and workers, accusing the BJP-led state government of using the police to "harass" party workers.

The BJP, however, accepted the electorate's verdict. Congratulating Kishor, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary wrote on X, "In the grand festival of democracy, the people have chosen Jan Suraaj in the Bankipur Assembly by-election. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Prashant Kishor ji on his victory, while respecting the people's decision."
