PM Modi to flag off Meerut Metro, Namo Bharat train today; unveil ₹12,930 crore projects

Meerut (UP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat high-speed regional rail service on Sunday as part of a major expansion of rapid transit infrastructure in western Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The visit includes multiple inaugurations, a metro ride, and a large public meeting.
Modi will begin his schedule with an arrival at Hindon Airport at 11 am, before travelling to Meerut, where the day’s key events have been organised.
Packed schedule in Meerut
According to the district administration, Yogi Adityanath is expected to reach the Mohkampur helipad near Shatabdi Nagar station at 11.15 am, shortly before Modi’s helicopter lands at 11.30 am. The chief minister will receive the prime minister at the helipad.
At 12.30 pm, Modi will flag off both the Namo Bharat train and the newly completed Meerut Metro from the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat station. He and Adityanath will then travel by metro to Meerut South station.
From Meerut South, the prime minister will continue by road to Mohiuddinpur, where he is scheduled to address a public gathering around 1 pm, lay foundation stones, and inaugurate a series of development projects. He is expected to spend roughly an hour at the venue before departing by helicopter for Hindon Airport around 2.10 pm.
82-km Delhi–Meerut corridor to be dedicated to nation
The inauguration marks another major milestone in India’s push to expand high-speed regional transit, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. The Namo Bharat service forms part of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), designed to offer fast and frequent connectivity between Delhi and Meerut.
With a design speed of 180 km per hour, Namo Bharat is India’s first RRTS network. The newly inaugurated sections include the 5-km stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and a 21-km portion between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
Sarai Kale Khan, designated as the originating station of the corridor, will operate as a major multimodal hub linking Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and the Ring Road. The other newly commissioned Namo Bharat stations are Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram.
UP CM hails event as ‘golden chapter’
Ahead of the visit, Chief Minister Adityanath said the day would mark a significant moment for the state’s development drive.
