Airlines welcome ATF price moderation as stocks reflects renewed confidence

India’s leading airlines have broadly welcomed the government’s decision to moderate the increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices for domestic operations, viewing it as a timely intervention amid rising cost pressures and global uncertainty. The move is being seen as a stabilising factor for an industry that has been navigating a difficult operating environment marked by volatile fuel prices and geopolitical disruptions.
Air India described the decision as both thoughtful and timely, noting that it offers much-needed relief at a critical juncture. The airline indicated that such policy support is essential to sustaining operations during periods of heightened external pressure.
Similarly, IndiGo termed the move a meaningful step forward, highlighting that it provides greater cost predictability for carriers. The airline also pointed out that improved cost stability could translate into more accessible and affordable fares for passengers, reinforcing demand recovery.
SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh called the partial increase in ATF prices a major relief for the sector. He emphasised that the decision comes at a time when airlines are dealing with multiple global challenges, including fuel market volatility and operational disruptions. Singh also acknowledged the role of Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and senior officials in ensuring a balanced approach to pricing.
Akasa Air echoed similar sentiments, stating that such measures help create a more stable operating environment. The airline noted that better cost management ultimately supports more sustainable pricing for travellers, which is crucial in maintaining growth momentum in the domestic market.
Industry voices have underlined that the government’s calibrated approach to ATF pricing reflects a broader commitment to supporting aviation through ongoing global headwinds. With fuel accounting for a significant share of airline operating costs, even partial relief can have a meaningful impact on margins and route planning decisions.
The positive sentiment was also reflected in the stock market, where airline shares witnessed an uptick following the announcement. Stocks of major carriers, including InterGlobe Aviation and SpiceJet, saw gains during the trading session, driven by investor optimism around improved cost outlooks and potential margin stability. The rally indicates growing confidence that supportive policy measures, combined with strong demand fundamentals, could help the sector navigate near-term challenges more effectively.
