Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a prolonged heatwave in North Tamil Nadu over the next three months, even as moderate rainfall is expected in the Western Ghats districts in the coming days.

According to weather officials, the winter season in Tamil Nadu extended longer than usual this year. However, the upcoming summer season 2026 is projected to be significantly hotter, particularly in the northern districts.

Heatwave to grip Northern Tamil Nadu till May

The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions in Tamil Nadu are likely to intensify from March and persist through April and May. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, said maximum temperatures across the state may remain 2–3 degrees Celsius above normal during this period.

Northern parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to experience the sharpest rise in temperatures, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Authorities have advised residents to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Moderate rainfall forecast in the Western Ghats

Despite the heatwave alert, parts of the state are set to receive rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Comorin Sea and adjoining areas. The system is likely to trigger light to moderate rain in Western Ghats districts over the next five days.

Weather officials said intermittent showers could bring relatively cooler conditions to these regions. Additionally, light rainfall is forecast in the coastal districts of southern Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

However, most other districts across the state are expected to witness predominantly dry weather in the coming days.

Morning mist likely in Chennai, coastal areas

The IMD has also indicated the possibility of light mist or haze during early morning hours in the Western Ghats districts and coastal regions, including Chennai. Such transitional weather conditions may slightly reduce visibility at dawn.

Public advisory amid intense summer forecast

With contrasting weather patterns, rising temperatures in North Tamil Nadu and scattered rainfall in the west and south, meteorologists are closely monitoring the situation.

Authorities have urged the public, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, to follow heatwave safety guidelines, remain hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours as the state braces for an intense summer.

The latest Tamil Nadu weather update underscores the likelihood of a challenging season ahead, with sustained heatwave conditions expected to dominate much of the state through May.
