Ex-Karnataka MLA saves American woman’s life during mid-air medical emergency

Bengaluru: A former Karnataka legislator and practising doctor, Anjali Nimbalkar, saved the life of an American woman who suffered a medical emergency during a Goa–New Delhi flight, officials said on Sunday.
The incident occurred mid-air when the woman complained of discomfort and shivering before losing consciousness and her pulse. Nimbalkar, who was travelling on the flight at the time, immediately stepped in and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), successfully reviving the passenger.
Medical emergency at 30,000 feet
According to official sources, Nimbalkar remained with the woman for the rest of the journey, closely monitoring her condition and providing reassurance until the flight landed in the national capital. On arrival in Delhi, the passenger was transferred to a hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
Passengers and crew members praised Nimbalkar’s swift response, with officials noting that her timely intervention proved crucial in stabilising the woman’s condition.
Political engagement during Delhi trip
Nimbalkar, an AICC secretary and co-incharge for Goa, Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli, was en route to Delhi to attend the Congress party’s “Vote Chori” rally at Ramlila Maidan when the incident unfolded.
A doctor by training, she previously served as the MLA from Khanapur in Karnataka before stepping away from active medical practice to focus on public life.
Chief minister praises ‘presence of mind’
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commended Nimbalkar’s actions in a post on X, describing her response as exemplary.
"Deeply moved and incredibly proud to hear about the remarkable presence of mind and compassion shown by former Khanapur MLA Dr Anjali Nimbalkar during a Goa–New Delhi flight. When an American woman suffered a medical emergency mid-air, Dr Anjali instantly rose to the occasion and administered timely CPR, saving a precious life."
He added that her actions underscored a deep sense of public duty beyond political roles.
"What makes this even more inspiring is that, despite having stepped away from her medical profession and being actively engaged in politics, the doctor within her responded without a second thought," Siddaramaiah said, adding that "this selfless act reflects not just professional expertise, but a profound sense of humanity, service, and responsibility toward fellow beings."
The chief minister further hailed Nimbalkar as a model of leadership, regardless of political position.
"Whether in power or not, leaders like Dr Anjali Nimbalkar stand as shining examples of true public service—always ready to help, without expecting anything in return. Such individuals set a powerful standard for society and remind us of the true meaning of leadership," he said.
Nimbalkar responds
Responding to the praise, Nimbalkar downplayed her role, saying she had merely fulfilled her professional responsibility.
"It (is) also my job and duty as a doctor to serve in this capacity whenever required. Means a lot coming from you, who himself is an example of social commitment," she said in a reply to the chief minister’s post on X.
