Platform ticket sale halted at New Delhi Railway station following deadly stampede

In the wake of a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Friday night, which claimed the lives of 18 people, including three children, Northern Railway has temporarily suspended the sale of platform tickets to manage the heavy rush of passengers. This measure is aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of passengers, particularly during the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela, which has led to an overwhelming influx of travelers.
The sale of platform tickets from the counter at New Delhi Railway Station has been halted between 4 pm and 11 pm until February 26. The decision comes as part of an effort to ease congestion and prevent further incidents after the tragic stampede left several passengers injured. In total, 18 lives were lost, and numerous individuals were left with injuries when confusion arose regarding the announcement of trains heading to Prayagraj, which had similar names.
To help manage the crowd, authorities have also decided to run four special trains for the convenience of the devotees and travellers heading to Prayagraj. These trains are expected to alleviate some of the congestion at New Delhi Railway Station. The special trains are: Train No 04420: New Delhi to Prayagraj Jn (19:00 hours), Train No 04422: New Delhi to Prayagraj Jn (21:00 hours), Train No 04424: Anand Vihar Terminal to Prayagraj Jn (20:00 hours), Train No 04418: New Delhi to Darbhanga Jn (15:00 hours).
Additionally, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police personnel were deployed at the station to maintain order and manage the crowd. Senior officers from the CRPF are conducting inspections, and the CRPF will be assisting the Delhi Police with additional support to ensure safety and control of the passenger movement.
The Indian Railways has announced compensation for the victims’ families, including Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries.
As authorities continue their investigations, the Railway Police are expected to review the situation further to prevent similar incidents in the future.
