Channai: Chennai is set to experience a noticeable shift in weather patterns this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across the city and surrounding regions.

A yellow alert has been issued, indicating the likelihood of localised weather disruptions that may affect daily routines.

On Monday, April 6, the city recorded a daytime temperature of around 35°C, but conditions are expected to become cooler by evening, with temperatures dipping to approximately 26°C. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies along with moderate rainfall, signalling the beginning of an unsettled weather phase.

The changing conditions are expected to persist through the week. On Tuesday, April 7, Chennai may see partly cloudy skies with a slight rise in temperature, touching around 36°C, although no official warning has been issued for the day. By Wednesday, April 8, the possibility of moderate rain and thunderstorms with lightning increases, with temperatures ranging between 27°C and 36°C.

Cloudy conditions with intermittent light rain are expected to continue on Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10. Temperatures may gradually rise during this period, with maximum values reaching up to 37°C while minimum temperatures remain steady at around 27°C.

The forecast for Saturday, April 11, suggests continued cloudy skies with light rainfall, maintaining similar temperature levels. The consistent pattern of cloud cover and precipitation indicates that the city may not experience extreme heat during this period, but humidity levels are likely to remain high.

The IMD’s yellow alert serves as a caution for residents to stay prepared for sudden showers, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and possible traffic disruptions. While the rainfall is not expected to be severe, the presence of thunderstorms and strong winds could lead to brief but intense weather activity.

Overall, the week ahead points to a mix of rain, cloud cover and warm temperatures, reflecting a transitional weather phase in Chennai as pre-monsoon activity begins to build.
