Chennai: Negotiations between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have reportedly entered the final stage ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Sources say the BJP has offered Vijay the position of Deputy Chief Minister if the alliance wins, along with approximately 80 assembly seats for his party.

Vijay, however, continues to aim for the Chief Minister’s post, which remains a key point in ongoing discussions. If the alliance goes through, it could reshape the state’s political dynamics, where even small shifts in votes often decide closely contested constituencies.

BJP’s strategic interest in Vijay

The BJP’s interest in TVK is largely driven by Vijay’s massive fan base across Tamil Nadu. Party strategists believe that even a small fraction of his supporters could have a significant impact on election outcomes. According to sources, “even a two per cent vote swing can change the direction of victory” in several constituencies.

The party has reportedly explored multiple channels to communicate with Vijay, including the involvement of a deputy chief minister from another state acting as a negotiator. This approach highlights BJP’s commitment to securing TVK as part of its alliance strategy.

Concerns within Vijay’s camp

While the offer is politically significant, advisers within Vijay’s camp have expressed caution. Some believe joining a national alliance too early could affect the credibility of TVK, which was established as an independent political alternative in Tamil Nadu. The concern is that aligning with an established national party could dilute the fresh, independent image that Vijay and his party have projected.

Vijay’s CBI summons and separate matters

Separately, Vijay flew to Delhi after being summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the third time in connection with the Karur stampede on 27 September 2025, in which 41 people died. Both TVK and BJP have denied any link between these visits and the ongoing alliance talks or attempts to secure censor board approval for Vijay’s film, ‘Jana Nayagan’.

BJP and TVK statements

BJP leaders have stressed that the NDA does not rely on any single party to win in Tamil Nadu. Former BJP state president K Annamalai said the NDA is strong and well-coordinated in the state, citing recent protests as proof of organisational strength.

Meanwhile, TVK deputy general secretary C T R Nirmal Kumar asked party members not to believe rumours. He noted that speculation is being circulated to divert attention from public issues, particularly via media and social media platforms.

A minor incident occurred at Chennai airport when a pair of scissors was found in Vijay’s luggage during a routine security check. The item was safely disposed of, and his travel continued without delay, according to Airports Authority of India sources.

Background: BJP, TVK and Tamil Nadu politics

Tamil Nadu’s politics has traditionally been dominated by regional parties such as the DMK and AIADMK. The entry of Vijay, a popular actor with a strong fan base, into active politics through TVK has drawn significant attention. Analysts note that even small vote swings in Tamil Nadu can have a decisive impact in constituencies, making alliances with popular figures politically strategic.

The BJP’s push to align with TVK reflects its aim to expand its influence in the state, where it has historically played a smaller role compared with national elections. Negotiations are closely watched, as they could affect not only seat-sharing arrangements but also the broader perception of political credibility for new entrants like Vijay.
