Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar maestro Pt Ravi Shankar, blasts Air India over damaged sitar | WATCH

Renowned sitarist Anoushka Shankar, daughter of legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, has expressed deep disappointment and frustration with Air India after her beloved sitar was found severely damaged following a recent flight. The multiple Grammy-nominated musician shared a video on social media showing the extensive cracks on the instrument, which has been her faithful companion through thousands of flights.
Shankar noted that despite paying an additional handling fee for her sitar, the Indian national carrier handled the instrument carelessly, resulting in what she described as "devastating" damage. She emphasised that it was her first time flying with Air India in many years and questioned how such mishandling could happen without "wilful disregard." The sitar, which holds immense cultural significance, was severely cracked, triggering widespread outrage.
"This is the country this music belongs to," Shankar stated poignantly, highlighting the irony of such treatment from India's flagship airline. The incident has sparked backlash among fans, musicians, and celebrities alike, with figures such as Vishal Dadlani and comedian Zakir Khan expressing their support and describing the damage as heartbreaking.
As of now, Air India has not publicly responded to the criticism. The episode has raised concerns about how musical instruments and delicate cargo are handled by airlines, especially when artists pay extra for special handling.
Anoushka Shankar is currently recognised for her album Chapter III: We Return to Light, which has garnered critical acclaim and Grammy nominations.
