Tired of government apathy, Madhya Pradesh villagers unite to build own school

In an inspiring display of community spirit, residents of Shikaritola village in Madhya Pradesh's Dindori district have started constructing a new government primary school after alleging that repeated requests for a new building went unanswered. The old school was demolished after becoming unsafe, leaving 52 students to study in a cramped rented room.

Determined to secure a better future for their children, every family contributed ₹500, while villagers volunteered their labour to build the school themselves. Students say the previous building had cracked walls and a leaking roof, making learning difficult, while teachers say all five classes are currently being taught in a single rented classroom due to a lack of space.

Despite approaching district officials multiple times, villagers claim no new building was sanctioned. With the monsoon approaching, the community is working to complete the construction quickly, hoping their children will soon return to a safe and permanent school.
